Nathan "Nearest" Green
T
he connec on began in 1864, when Jack Daniel first
learned the art of dis lling whiskey from Nearest Green at
a whiskey s ll owned by Reverend Dan Call. Nathan "Near-
est" Green was a slave. Later in 1866, Jack Daniel bought
the s ll and hired "Nearest" Green, now a free man, as
Master Dis ller. The first African American master dis ller
and now known as "The Godfather of Tennessee Whiskey."
His son George also became a Master Dis ller, and some of
his descendants s ll work for Jack Daniel's Whiskey to this
day. Today, there's also a black owned dis llery in his name
Uncle Nearest premium Whiskey and is forever part of Jack
Daniel's Tennessee Whiskey legacy and American history.
