URSULA BATTLE ALL THE WORLD IS A STAGE by Nikia Vaughan Gossip, death, love affairs and conspiracy? Sounds like Tyler Perry's newest original TV series right? Well, playwright Ursula V. Battle's newest Stage Play "The 'New' Teachers Lounge" could definitely give Mr. Perry some competition. Baltimore native Ursula Battle wears many hats. However, right now her plays are becoming her crown. A graduate of Walbrook High School, Coppin State University and University of Balti- more, Ursula is a journalist and also has a Public Relations background. Ursula says that she has a God given gift of writing. About 20 years ago, Ursula and her mother went to see Shelly Garrett's stage play, Beauty Shop and her mother said she should consider writing a play. Ursula's mother, an educator, thought it would be a great idea to compose a play of what goes on in the teachers' lounge. Being the daughter of an educator, Ursula had firsthand experiences of what went on in the lounge. In 2002, "The Teachers' Lounge" debuted at Coppin State University. In the very near future, Ursula sees her plays going national. She would love to go on the road. There has been some interest in creating a "The 'New' Teachers' Lounge" tour. Ursula admires Tyler Perry, however, she believes we need a female playwright. Ursula has this to offer to aspiring playwrights, thespians and directors, "Be persis- tent and just do it," she encourages. "There are many challenges that come with the territory, but stay the course as it's very easy to become unfocused." Baltimore, Ursula says, is a tough market. Therefore, she walks by faith and not by sight. Ursula says "Don't share your ideas. Unfortunately, people will take them and run with your creativity as their own. Surround yourself with positive people and stay in your lane. Hire professionals who have a gift who also share your vision." Ursula has more productions in the future including "Discord in the Choir/ A Church Comedy" and "My Big Fat Ghetto Fabulous Wedding."
